You Are Helping Victims of Human Trafficking

07.06.2017

It’s a tough, gritty, heartbreaking job . . . thanks for doing your part!

Ministering to people caught in the web of human trafficking requires determination, compassion, and most importantly, a strong spiritual foundation. That is why your support of Moody students is so vital. Your gifts to Moody help launch ministry leaders like Alexis and Elizabeth—two young women who recently graduated from Moody with their degrees in Ministry to Victims of Sexual Exploitation.

With your help, Moody is preparing graduates for ministry to these victims. And your partnership provides the solid biblical and theological training they need to follow God’s leading.

Two of our recent grads want to tell you how God pressed this issue on their hearts and why your support has helped them follow His leading.

Meet Elizabeth, one of the leaders you helped launch into ministry.

Elizabeth grew up in Ecuador, the daughter of missionaries. It was there that God first pressed this issue on her heart. “My first childhood friend was sold by her father to pay off debts to his tribe,” she explains. “One day I came home and she was no longer there. This was an eye-opening event in my life that would shape and mold my heart with a passion to fight injustice and help these victims.”

Moody helped prepare Elizabeth for the difficult work of restoring broken lives. “I learned how vitally important it is to have a strong foundation grounded and rooted in God’s Word,” Elizabeth says. “Our relationship with Christ is the most important thing. If we are not building up ourselves in His image and in His love, we will cause more harm than good.

“This area of ministry goes into the darkness and evil of this world. It is gritty and grimy and painful to walk alongside someone who has experienced the kind of suffering they have gone through.”

“Without Christ, it would all be futile. Without what Moody has taught me about a solid theology and my growth in faith and in my relationship with Christ through that, I would not be the believer I am today in this line of work.”

Elizabeth spent her six-month internship in South Africa working in safe houses. “I had the opportunity to accompany a resident to visit her family for the first time in 11 years. They were planning her funeral, thinking she had died long ago.

As they walked into the village, the girl’s family began to weep, praising God that their daughter had returned. “Seeing this girl’s heart overflowing with the love of her heavenly Father was more than I could handle. I knew why I was called to this line of work.”

After Moody, Elizabeth plans to join an anti-trafficking organization that sets up residential safe houses. “I feel strongly called overseas, and I pray that I will be able to join this organization promptly to begin training. I would not be here if it were not for Moody donors. I cannot thank you enough or say it more sincerely, because without your faithful gifts to Moody, I would not be able to afford higher education with a degree as unique and special as the one that I am in.”

“You are more than a blessing.  I will be able to charge fearlessly forward knowing that you supported me and have given me the tools needed for the line of work I am called to. Thank you!”

Meet Alexis, another leader you helped launch into ministry

Alexis, born and raised in West Palm Beach, Florida, began considering missions in high school. “I knew that I wanted to do ministry but I did not really know what I specifically wanted to do,” she said.

Everything changed the summer before her senior year. “I was shocked to learn that my state of Florida is number three in the most reported cases of trafficking!”

At a Christian college fair, Alexis spoke with a representative from Moody. “They told me about the new Ministry to Victims of Sexual Exploitation major. I started to pray about whether or not that might be a direction the Lord was leading me. I knew this was a ministry that needed people to get involved.”

While attending Moody, her understanding of the practical, emotional, and spiritual needs of victims grew:

“I learned how complex sexual exploitation is. Even though there were many times of questioning, the Lord confirmed to me (and still does to this day) that this is what I am called to do.”

Moody’s program involves a residency internship where students learn alongside ministry organizations. “I worked at a long-term residential home in South Florida with teenage girls who had been rescued from sex trafficking. Many of these girls were trafficked here in the States.”

“The girls looked to me as an older sister figure. I spent much of my time getting to know them. It was very common for me to do their makeup, curl their hair, help with homework, etc. I also led a Bible study through the Gospel of John. Along with working in the safe house, I interned with a human trafficking awareness program.”

Alexis hopes to do trafficking awareness and prevention in the future. “I want to work with survivors and teens. I am hoping to go back to the ministry I interned with and become a mentor to residents in the home.”

“Thank you so much for giving to Moody. If it were not for donors like you, I would not be able to earn this degree. Because of you, I have not only received an amazing education, but I have also been able to graduate debt free and go straight into ministry.”
