Moody Breaks Ground on Chapman Center

11.18.2016

Four-story, 50,000-square-foot building to be home to Moody Radio, Moody Publishers and Gary D. Chapman Library and Exhibit

Moody Global Ministries broke ground on Friday, Nov. 18, for the construction of the Chapman Center on the Chicago campus.

The four-story, 50,000-square-foot building will primarily serve as Moody’s global media center, becoming home to Moody Radio and Moody Publishers. Featuring state-of-the-art work spaces and radio broadcast production studios, the Chapman Center will also serve as a hands-on space for Moody Bible Institute’s Communications students to learn from seasoned professionals.

Chapman Center

Designed by Chicago’s Shive-Hattery Architecture and Engineering firm, the Chapman Center will be built by Berglund Construction on the east side of Wells Street, next to the Sweeting Center (dotted line marks the location).

In addition to Moody Radio and Moody Publishers, the following will be located in the Chapman Center.

  • Gary D. Chapman Library and Exhibit:
This will include a full collection of Dr. Chapman's works and counseling resources. A multi-media exhibit honoring the life and ministry of Dr. Chapman in the area of marriage and family will be open to the public.

  • The Gary D. Chapman Chair of Marriage and Family:
The office of the chair, currently Dr. John Trent, will be located near Moody Publishers and Moody Radio leadership to help foster collaboration as Dr. Trent serves as Moody's voice on marriage and family.

“With our radio and publishing ministries having a single, state-of-the-art space in which to collaborate and create, and to mentor the next generation of Christian leaders in media, Moody’s mission to equip people with the truth of God’s Word is entering an exciting and historic season of growth,” said Dr. Paul Nyquist, president of Moody Global Ministries. “We are extremely grateful to those who have prayerfully and financially supported this project and are excited to build on the Chapman's legacy in the area of marriage and family, as well as media and conference ministry.”

Approximately 1,500 staff, students and special guests gathered on Nov. 18, in Moody’s Torrey-Gray Auditorium for a time of celebration.

Breaking Ground

The historic occasion began with a special assembly held in Moody’s Torrey-Gray Auditorium. Dr. Nyquist unveiled the final artist rendering of the Chapman Center, Moody’s first new building since the Alumni Student Center was constructed nearly 20 years ago. Senior vice president of media, Greg Thornton, read from 1 Chronicles 29:10-13 and prayed for the construction and future use of the Chapman Center.

Also leading in a time of prayer and addressing those in attendance was Dr. Gary Chapman, for whom the building is named. Announced in 2014, a generous gift from Dr. Gary and Karolyn Chapman was given to Moody for the establishment of the Chapman Center on the Chicago campus. After reflecting on Psalm 71:17-18 and his time studying at Moody Bible Institute as a young man, he concluded, “There is nothing more important than being faithful…I want to challenge you to be faithful, faithful unto death with the ministry God has given us.”

Dr. Chapman is a 1958 graduate of Moody Bible Institute and author of Moody Publishers' #1 New York Times bestseller, The 5 Love Languages. Dr. Chapman also speaks to thousands of couples nationwide through his weekend marriage conferences, and hosts a nationally syndicated Moody Radio program, A Love Language Minute, and a Saturday morning program, Building Relationships with Dr. Gary Chapman.

Following the assembly, the groundbreaking ceremony was held on the site where the Chapman Center will be built on campus. Taking part in the ceremony was Dr. Nyquist, Dr. Gary and Karolyn Chapman, and Moody Board of Trustees chair, Randy Fairfax.

Chapman Center Ground Breaking Ceremony

Dr. Paul Nyquist and Randy Fairfax lead everyone in a time of prayer during the groundbreaking ceremony.

“Lord, help us to use (the Chapman Center) to continue to share your word throughout your world,” said Fairfax during his prayer. He continued to pray for Moody Radio, Moody Publishers and the students who will be in the new building. “Help them to be creative, to use their minds, talents, intellect and skills to glorify you. I pray that we would be good stewards of everything you give us and that it would reflect back to you and people might know you.”
