Newest associate professor to also serve as director of MTS Counseling Center.

As Moody Theological Seminary begins this academic year, the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program welcomes a new professor.

Dr. Colette Blakely, associate professor of clinical mental health counseling is Moody’s new full-time faculty member. She will also serve as director of the MTS Counseling Center, where licensed counselors and graduate students serve community clients.

“We were looking for someone with a solid foundation in teaching, and excellence in counseling and in integrating faith and theology as it relates to mental health,” said Dr. Deborah Gorton, program head of Clinical Mental Health Counseling at MTS. “Dr. Blakely is engaging and has a strong passion for developing relationships with our students. She also has a solid foundation in her faith and a gift for making course content come alive.”

Blakely is especially passionate about serving teenagers and single adults. In addition to working as a licensed clinical professional counselor, she has presented at conferences and workshops on teen issues, as well as served as a small group leader with Communities in Schools of Chicago, Lydia Home, and the YWCA

“I’m excited about serving at Moody because it is guided biblically in all its endeavors,” said Blakely. The two courses Blakely will be teaching are Theories of Psychotherapy and Group Counseling, with the focus on equipping her students to listen to their future clients and ultimately meet them effectively and passionately right where they are.

In her course, Theories of Psychotherapy, Blakely said, “My desire is for students to learn to align their faith in the Lord and their assumptions so they counsel from a biblical worldview.” The course, Group Counseling will allow students to act as mirrors to each other in a small setting. Through the course, she hopes students will learn the benefits of group counseling for their clients and see there can be healing and encouragement in a group setting.

Blakely grew up in Jacksonville, Florida, was a missionary for 25 years in South Africa, the Philippines, Zimbabwe and Honduras. She graduated from Regent University with a PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision. She has served parents, educators, and students for more than 15 years in secondary and higher education.
